A Large Sun Piece
A gentleman reached out to me, asking if this piece might have been made by my parents:
The piece was most likely a “joint venture,” as the nose bears some similarity to other pieces made by Mary while the eyes were probably done by Tom. The face of the sun was glazed with cadmium yellow but the glaze was probably not applied thickly enough and it mostly burned out. The red rays did not burn out – that glaze was cadmium red. The piece is mounted on plywood and the tan paint of the background was mixed with vermiculite to give it texture. The frame, such as it was, was made out of lattice wood and painted black. The signature is that of Mary, who likely used black acrylic paint to sign it with.
Like almost everyone who has a piece made by Tom or Mary, the owner loves it and will keep it in the family.
